Things to do in Flic-en-Flac Mauritius

December 20 2018

The gorgeous area of Flic-en-Flac, located in the Black River District on the sensational sunset, or west, coast of Mauritius, is a truly sublime place to spend your tropical holidays. Deemed the second most popular tourist area after Grand Baie, this beautiful spot has grown over the last 200 years from being a quiet fishing village to one of the most extraordinary, and important, holiday destinations on the island for both tourists and locals, with a myriad of exciting things to do.

Stunning snow white sandy beaches that stretch for miles, flanked by Casuarina trees, cyan reef-protected lagoons that are home to an array of spectacular marine life and coconut palm-fringed resorts make for a truly memorable holiday in Flic-en-Flac Mauritius.

Wonderfully located, many of the villas and hotels in Flic-en-Flac have direct beach access, and the area serves as the ultimate home base from which to explore Mauritius, being an hour from the airport and around 30 minutes from Port Louis. It also on some great bus routes which can easily take travellers to some of the key areas in Mauritius—a stay in Flic-en-Flac means an endless list of wonderful things to do.

Wondering what the top things to do while in Flic-en-Flac Mauritius are? Here are some of our recommendations:

Casela World of Adventures

Casela World of Adventures

One of the best things to do in Flic-en-Flac is undoubtedly to spend a day at Casela World of Adventures, especially great for families. This incredible nature park spans a whopping 14 hectares and offers a little something for every member of the family. With a wide range of packages and options to choose from—from petting zoos and zip line adventures to quad-bike safaris—there’s no shortage of things to do at Casela World of Adventures in Mauritius.

We don’t recommend the wild cat encounters—these are ‘wild’ animals at the end of the day, even though they might be bred in captivity, incidents have happened in other parts of Africa at similar attractions. There are also animal rights groups who question the quality of life for these big cats in such enclosures. However, apart from that, it’s a fabulous place to spend the day, and conveniently close to the main stretch of hotels in Flic-en-Flac.

Indulge in the huge variety of water sports

Paddle boat

Flic-en-Flac is an utterly extraordinary holiday destination, and the area’s allure is due, in a large part, to its soft golden beaches (for some much-needed relaxation and beautifully sun-kissed skin) and mesmerising crystalline lagoon. Protected by a huge reef, the lagoon here is naturally fantastic for hours spent snorkelling or swimming but one of the top things to do in Flic-en-Flac is definitely to make the most of the temperate water with the array of incredible water sports on offer.

From non-motorised water sports (often offered on a complimentary basis at the exclusive four- and five-star hotels in Flic-en-Flac) that include everything from SUP to kayaking, to motorised options, there’s sure to be something here to catch your fancy. With an exceptional climate and optimal conditions in the tropical lagoon, time spent enjoying the water sports in Flic-en-Flac is sure to be time well spent!

Go diving

Unsurprisingly, given the incredible lagoons and reefs in the area, another top thing to do in Flic-en-Flac for many is to go diving. When you go scuba diving in Flic-en-Flac, you have the chance to see a huge variety of brilliantly coloured fish and corals, turtles, breathtaking (and oftentimes huge) mantas or stingrays, among a plethora of other incredible marine life. A short speedboat trip to some of the island's most famous dive spots and a few magical moments in this underwater playground will leave you with vivid memories that last long after you hand your equipment in. If you haven’t got your diving certification, there are some stellar dive centres on the island that can help you enter the diving world for the first time or upskill, so that you don’t miss out on the fabulous opportunity to dive in Mauritius.

Swimming with dolphins

There’s something truly extraordinary about being able to encounter wild dolphins in their natural habit—something you can’t do just anywhere in the world, which puts this activity high up on the list of best things to do in Flic-en-Flac. A speedboat will take you out into the deep blue and if the conditions are right and you spot any dolphins (which could be one of two species, either spinner dolphins or bottlenose dolphins) and are able to get close to them safely, then you will be given snorkelling equipment and be allowed in the water. You may even spot some whales or turtles while you are at it.

Being able to see these magnificent, energetic and playful creatures frolicking in the waves is an unforgettable experience, but keep in mind that as these are wild creatures, sightings cannot be guaranteed and it’s important to approach and enjoy the dolphins respectfully at all times.

Explore the village itself

One of the best things about this superb area is that, while it’s not quite as busy as Grand Baie, it still has a great selection of cafes, shops, bars and restaurants to explore. For the tourists who need at least one shopping excursion to enhance their holiday in Mauritius, heading to the Cascavelle Shopping Village is one of the best things to do in Mauritius. With a selection of niche boutiques and big stores housing popular fashion brands, you can find anything here from Mauritian souvenirs to beautiful clothing. There’s also a wide variety of restaurants and cafes here, perfect for a mid-shop pitstop.

Catch the sunset

There’s no better place to see this gorgeous natural spectacle then from a gorgeous beach in Flic-en-Flac. If you are in this area, by far one of the top things to do in Flic-en-Flac is to watch the incredible natural light display at sunset. Watch the sky turn from pink and purple to gold and red as you sip your favourite signature cocktail at a trendy bar offering front row seats to sunset (the new Buddha Bar Beach at Sugar Beach is sure to be the hottest spot to be seen this summer). As dusk settles in head to a beachside restaurant to live out the balmy island Mauritian evenings in style.

Make the most of your luxury hotel in Mauritius

One of the greatest things about Flic-en-Flac is that there’s no shortage of wonderful places to stay, with the luxury four- and five-star hotels (La Pirogue and Sugar Beach come to mind) being the real standouts.
