La Pirogue, a renowned hotel on the west coast, has received the prestigious Travelife certification, dedicated to hotels and accommodation. Travelife is an internationally recognised accommodation sustainability programme. In over 50 countries we have around 1,500 members who use our practical tools and resources to improve their business's environmental, financial and social impact.
The audit took place over several days in 2019 where a dedicated team set to work with the support of the General Manager and the staff of the hotel.
To obtain Travelife Gold certification, several criteria were taken into account. They are : minimising their environmental impacts, improving the economic and social impacts for people in their community, respecting and protecting human rights and fair labour practices and safeguarding animal welfare and biodiversity.
At La Pirogue, to eradicate the use of plastic bottles, bottling of water in glass bottles is carried out on site. Staff are made aware of the need to preserve the environment and help the communities and the poor. In addition, the hotel distributed several "packs" to the Forces Vivres de Flic en Flac to 25 families in the region during the curfew. La Pirogue is also home to the only International Marine Research Center in Mauritius that works on coastal erosion on the west coast in partnership with the University of Mauritius and the University of Western Australia.
With this new award, La Pirogue is preparing to reopen its doors very soon.
With appropriate sanitary measures, the hotel will offer very attractive offers to Mauritians and residents who wish to escape after these long months of containement.
