Snorkelling in Mauritius - The Best Spots

May 08 2018

Mauritius is a stunning holiday destination with dramatic volcanic scenery, stretches of lime-green sugar cane plantations, lush tropical interiors and dazzling topaz-blue waters; it’s literally what dream holidays are made of. It’s the perfect place for families and couples looking for the ultimate getaway, for celebrities in need of an idyllic escape and for nature and wildlife enthusiasts in search of an array of unbelievable endemic flora and fauna—both on land and in the water!

With mesmerising and warm tropical waters, it’s also no surprise that this destination is popular with water sports enthusiasts and of course, divers. But diving isn’t the only way to make the most of the exciting underwater world of Mauritius; it has equally excellent opportunities for those looking to don their snorkel and flippers. Thanks to the superb warm, tropical waters and the fact that the island is practically encircled by remarkable coral reefs (other than the southern coast of the country), Mauritius is an exceptional place to snorkel.

If you would like to indulge in hours of underwater exploring while on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, then here some of the best places to go snorkelling in Mauritius:

1. Blue Bay Marine Park

Blue Bay Marine park is undoubtedly one of the top places to go snorkelling in Mauritius and it’s arguably the most popular snorkelling spot on the island. This protected marine park is just off Mauritius’ southeast corner and is known for its super conditions, with typically clear waters which make for great visibility. An awesome place for beginners to go snorkelling in Mauritius, Blue Bay Marine Park ranges between 5 and 6m deep and a boat transfer is not required to get there—you can merely wade in from the beach.

In this magical spot, avid snorkelers have the opportunity to spot a plethora of interesting, vibrant fish which include wrasse, clownfish, angelfish, parrotfish and many more. You can also explore the incredible underwater flora here which is made up of amazing corals, mangroves as well as algae and seagrasses. It’s a veritable underwater playground for a water baby, so be sure to set some solid time aside for this wonderful snorkelling site. If you want a break from the water itself, it’s also a remarkable lagoon to explore via glass bottom boat (these are very popular in Mauritius).

2. Pereybere

The exquisite crystal clear lagoon at Pereybere in the north of Mauritius is a fantastic location for those looking to go snorkelling in Mauritius, mainly because of the size and depth of the lagoon. It’s also a phenomenal beach to spend the day and enjoy the views of the turquoise ocean. The beach here is incredibly popular and there’s always a range of things on offer, rom fast food stalls and wonderful restaurants to a range of water sports. While the focus here is more about the atmosphere than anything else, it’s a great place to snorkel and discover the array of sea creatures Mauritius is known for.

3. Trou aux Biches

Another of the finest places to go snorkelling in Mauritius, Trou aux Biches is actually perfect for a day out with friends or family. An absolutely stunning beach, this spot is known for its casuarina trees (which line the beach instead of the typical coconut palm trees), its stunning lagoon which is wonderfully shallow and usually very calm (making it prime for snorkelling) and the reef that is fairly close to the shoreline. To enjoy a fantastic bit of snorkelling in this spot, all you need to do is swim out to the reef through the shallow water and take in the abundance of stunning marine life. Just a word of warning, sometimes the wind picks up from the shore which can make the swim back a little more challenging than it was on the way in.

4. Mahebourg Bay

An absolutely stellar place to go snorkelling in Mauritius, Mahebourg Bay offers a wonderful site approximately 1.3km off the island. Here you will find a small patch reef which is accessible by boat (you can book a tour from Mahebourg itself, but make sure that you are going with a proper tour company and local guide). This “best kept secret” amongst the snorkelling spots is located in one of the biggest lagoons in Mauritius and boasts a phenomenally preserved coral which attracts a horde of exotic marine life which include the likes of colourful clown fish, needlefish, damselfish and barracudas in predominantly tubular coral with patches of staghorns and fire coral in between.

5. Flic-en-Flac

There’s no doubt that the remarkable beach at Flic-en-Flac is one of the island’s best (and is in fact, the island’s longest) beach. Situated in the west of Mauritius, this is an absolute must-visit place. Pristine powder-white sands stretch along mesmerising cobalt-blue waters and it makes for a phenomenal place from which to watch the dramatic Mauritian sunset.

It’s also a fabulous spot to snorkel with a big lagoon that is considered quite safe thanks to its typically calm water. It also has gently shelving sands and is home to an array of wonderful fish including the white spotted boxfish, the incredible moorish idols and blue-barred parrotfish to name but a few of them. The one thing to take heed of when heading to this lagoon, however, is that it tends to have a lot of sea urchins as well as shells on the ocean floor and amongst the coral, so be careful when you navigate through it—we recommend heading to a nearby supermarket or beach shop and purchasing a pair of swimming shoes to be on the safe side. There are also wonderful opportunities to spot dolphins in Flic-en-Flac (at certain hours of the day) so keep an eye out for them.

6. Ile aux Cerfs

Ile aux Cerfs, Mauritius

Ile aux Cerfs is the magical must-visit islet just off the east coast of Mauritius. It’s a phenomenal day-trip destination full of incredible wonders such as a huge array of land and water-based activities (and of course, it has one of the most magnificent golf courses in the world)—in short, it's the ultimate Robinson Crusoe fantasy destination. This incredible island is also absolutely wonderful for snorkelling.

This perfect island has a gorgeous turquoise lagoon and is surrounded by white sandbars which make for easy and safe swimming and snorkelling. But it’s not only a wonderful spot to snorkel, it’s an exciting one with a rich underwater world filled with colourful fish and coral. If you are lucky you can spot starfish, sea bream, blue striped snappers and groupers (some of which tend to hide in the grass beds near the reef). One thing is for sure, Ile aux Cerfs makes for a stunning day-trip destination for snorkellers.

There’s no doubt that Mauritius is an exceptional place to spend your magical holiday in the sun and if you are looking for the ultimate accommodation while you are here then look no further than a stay at one of the outstanding Sun Resorts. These gorgeous luxury hotels provide everything you could possibly need for a holiday in paradise; from sumptuous Mauritian food to exceptional accommodation, a huge range of activities (including snorkelling) and so much more, a holiday spent at any of these resorts is bound to stay with you forever.
