Much to many people’s surprise, Mauritius is not only a lazy island destination where days are spent soaking up the warm African sun or exploring the tropical terrain and evenings are exclusively reserved for sumptuous dinners and early nights—unless that’s what you want from your island holiday.
For those who feel like making the most of the warm tropical nights, there are a host of clubs and bars—which range from beachside bars, incredible restaurant-clubs, vibey nightclubs and classy lounges—that prove that the nightlife in Mauritius, while underrated, is excellent. If you are looking to head out for a night on the town while in this tropical paradise, here are some of the phenomenal places to go:
Fifty Five Lounge Club
This club is an elegant haunt for holidaymakers looking to enjoy international beats while sipping on sophisticated cocktails. This stunning club, which is located in Grand Baie, has been designed in intense reds and violets, with pictures of famous people along the walls. The excellent and vibey music is played by international and popular local DJs and for those that want to start their night early, they offer a wonderful menu which includes the likes of mezze platters and mushroom brûlée among other offerings. Keep an eye out for their event evenings and happy hour specials.
The ultimate stop for travellers looking for excellent nightlife in Mauritius, Zoobar, located in Quatre Bornes, offers guests a fantastic place for a laid-back evening soaking up the warm Mauritian evenings. They also have an excellent range of dishes on the menu, so it makes for a great place to enjoy a glass of wine accompanied by one of the establishment’s mouth-watering delicacies. This club is open every day, which means that there’s no limit on the number of amazing nights you can have here.
One of the most popular bars on the island of Mauritius, Kenzi Bar is situated in one of the best and most popular tourist areas, Flic-en-Flac. This bar provides a laid-back environment for holidaymakers to have a great time in a relaxed atmosphere. Here the natural elements are embraced with sandy floors, rustic wooden furniture and beach-style decor.
Simple yet delicious tapas are served to hungry patrons while the drinks menu boasts a huge array of tasty tropical cocktails. The ambience here is light and friendly with live entertainment and colourful dance performances on offer to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable experience—and which make it hard to stay off the dancefloor.
Banana Beach Club
Deemed the most popular club in Mauritius (according to TripAdvisor), Banana Beach Club is a diamond in the rough when it comes to the nightlife in Mauritius. Located in Grand Baie (in the north of Mauritius) the decor, unsurprisingly, sports banana tree replicas that are wonderfully quirky, luminous lights and toe-tapping live music that sets the mood perfectly. This club buzzes with a tangible energy and is frequented by a hip, vibrant crowd. It’s a fabulous place to eat, drink and be merry, with a superb restaurant—called the Gourmet Grill—and, as they claim on their website, the “best Mojito on the island”.
Try the local Phoenix Beer or one of their many exotic tropical cocktails (made with phenomenal and fresh Mauritian fruit) and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of this incredible club. With 24 years of experience, it’s no wonder this tropical beach bar draws in both locals and tourists visiting the island. Visit this wonderful place, with their chilled vibe, for a sundowner, a tasty bite to eat or to dance into the night—it’s definitely got a little something for everyone.
Les Enfants Terribles
This modern and chic club is another of most popular clubs in Mauritius. Also called LET by the locals (or in Creole, Zenfan Terrible), this establishment is on the upper-end scale of the nightlife in Mauritius. Largely frequented by locals, this club is located in Grand Baie, but not right in the middle of the nightlife scene. Characterised by a much fancier crowd and general vibe, this exclusive place hosts many private events and special parties with live entertainment and world-class DJs. It’s arguably the best place for a fancy night out with your friends. Check out their social media pages to find out about their upcoming parties (or to make sure you don’t go on a night that they are having a private event) and make sure that you dress appropriately (men especially may just be turned away if they are not wearing the right attire fit for a classy club).
This sensational fine dining Creole restaurant doubles up as a modern nightclub on the weekends for discerning travellers looking for an elegant establishment in which to let down their hair. Currently located in the west of the island (close to Flic-en-Flac) this wonderful place is in the process of moving (to an as of yet undisclosed venue). But don’t fear, all signs point to it opening again somewhere stunning soon. Known for their upbeat clubbing scene, live music and fantastic food, it’s an excellent place to enjoy the nightlife in Mauritius. Check on their Facebook page to see when they are up and running once more.
Another favourite Grand Baie haunt (and number three on the TripAdvisor list), BARaBAR is a hip and happening hub that literally has it all; it’s a restaurant, a club (where people can dance the night away) and a pub, where sensational bite-sized tapas, inspired by both European and Asian cuisine, can be enjoyed.
Popular for its delectable (and largely original) sushi menu and its festive Friday nights, this club is perfect for those looking for something a little different while exploring the nightlife scene in Mauritius. Tourists love this unique slice of nightclub heaven and locals like it for its international flair, making it a perfect hangout for everyone.
This amazing sports bar has been going for quite some time, and in fact, it was the only bar in Tamarin Bay—situated in the west of Mauritius—when it first opened. The perfect place for sports fans eager to catch their favourite live sporting events (they have a total of three screens including two massive ones placed in their outside area), looking for an epic steak or wanting to try the local beers at reasonable prices.
Their outside area is awesome both during the day and at night with umbrellas sheltering their tables (set right in the sand) and a boardwalk lined by trees (which look beautiful at night with the lights on). Apart from excellent steaks, this bar also offers an extensive menu with pub-style food, special event nights (such as karaoke night or ladies night) and on Saturday and Friday nights, they offer partiers a superb place to enjoy live music and excellent DJs. It’s a fabulous bar to let loose and make the most of the nightlife in Mauritius.
