There are so many reasons why people love to travel. Some enjoy the experience of meeting new friends and discovering new places, others enjoy sightseeing or ticking destinations off of their bucket lists and others travel for the love of unique and incredible food. People will go to great lengths to ensure they get to eat pizza in Naples, enjoy a steaming bowl of freshly made pho in Vietnam, or indulge in a gorgeously delicious poke bowl in Hawaii—for many, it’s impossible to travel to a destination without indulging in the local delicacies and delights that have been expertly prepared with the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients and served in delicious (and often generous) servings.
Arguably one of the very best and most immersive ways to truly experience a destination, indulging in unusual culinary scenes is equal measures satisfying and informative—it can tell you an incredible amount about the destination you are visiting, its culture, its influences, and in many cases, even its history.
There’s no denying that Mauritius is a superb culinary destination for intrepid travellers and luxury jet-setters alike, and the local food here is absolutely sensational. One of the good things that came out of Mauritius’ chequered past is its variety of cultural influences and its wonderfully diverse population. Hugely evident in the plethora of exotic and delicious Mauritian dishes are the culinary influences from India, Asia, Africa and parts of Europe, with a local food scene that will leave you craving more. Hearty, rich curries, unbelievable fresh fruits and vegetables, Chinese-inspired dim sum among many other delicious morsels make this a destination worthy of the most discerning epicures around.
If the very thought of the sublime Mauritian fare has you salivating then here is one of the finest culinary experiences you can enjoy:
The Must-try 3-course Meal at Ile aux Cerfs
The wildly magical island of Ile aux Cerfs is a treasure trove of amazing adventures and exceptional experiences. Known for the idyllic day-trip destination Leisure Island and its world-class par 72 18-hole championship golf course designed by Bernhard Langer, Ile aux Cerfs is a truly spectacular destination. One thing is for sure, here, there’s no shortage of epic things to do and culinary delights to enjoy, but if time is limited and you are a golfer looking for something exclusive and out of the ordinary after a once-in-a-lifetime game on the Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club greens, then this special 3-course meal served at Filibusters (Ile aux Cerfs’ private golfer’s beach) should do perfectly:
The Divine Starter—Heart of Palm Salad
This delightful local dish, which is loved by locals as well as travellers, is expertly prepared at Filibusters using the finest, freshest ingredients from the best suppliers on the island. Simple yet satisfying, this interesting local dish is carefully created on Ile aux Cerfs using palm “hearts” (a part of the palm that is literally located at its very core), orange slices, slices of green pepper and the absolutely delicious smoked Marlin which is one of the most sensational local offerings. Beautifully prepared and presented, this crunchy salad is the perfect starter to whet the appetite and provides guests with a fresh, light salad that has a unique taste and texture—it’s certainly a dish that would be hard to find made in exactly in this way elsewhere.
Also often referred to as “Millionaire’s Salad” because of it’s rare central ingredient and the cost associated with it, each Heart of Palm Salad calls for the use of one palm “heart”. In other words, this means that an entire palm is cut down for each salad.
Apart from being served on Filibusters (which is exclusively reserved for golfers), the Heart of Palm Salad can be enjoyed in all of the restaurants at Ile aux Cerfs, so if you are not a golfer, you can still enjoy this simple yet spectacular dish in paradise.
Mains Course—A Delicious Grilled Seafood Platter
There’s nothing quite like the experience of enjoying a magical island holiday along spectacular, pristine beaches that are lapped by dazzling azure waters and enjoying some of the most delicious and freshest seafood around. With an unbelievable setting on the private beach and sumptuous seafood, you can’t go wrong with this as your mains, in fact, the seafood platter is one of the most popular dishes on the whole island and is always in high demand.
The seafood served differs according to the seasons and what is available (and naturally, what is freshest), but platters often include fresh lobster and white tuna alongside calamari skewers that are expertly grilled on the beach itself and served with fried rice and fresh salads. Delectable, fresh and cooked to perfection, this main course is guaranteed to be immensely satisfying and makes for the perfect main course that can be enjoyed with an unparalleled view of the ocean from Filibusters.
With a stunning starter and a sublime main course, it’s absolutely imperative to end your three-course meal at Filibusters in style; but that doesn’t mean you should go for a dish that is complicated or intricate. In fact, some of the best dishes are those that are simple and instead focus on making the most of the few beautiful ingredients that are used to create it. Many of the Mauritian desserts focus on refreshing tropical fruits, pineapple and mango being two of the favourites.
This particular pineapple dessert is a must-try, with a unique hot and cold combination that, in danger of spoiling the “surprise” element, is created by combining moreish, creamy ice cream and delicious homemade crumble that has been expertly dished inside a whole pineapple in which the dessert is gorgeously presented. Undoubtedly one of the most Instagram-worthy desserts on the island, this deliciously fresh delicacy is a wonderful way to end off an extraordinary three-course meal in the paradisiacal island of Ile aux Cerfs.
The best thing about dining at Ile aux Cerfs is the incredible options you have available. If this menu doesn't sound like your “cup of tea” then you can always dive into some incredible veg Thali at La Chaumière Masala, a signature Langer’s Burger at the Langer’s Bar and Grill, or enjoy a pizza from Sands Brill or Sands Bar—there’s sure to be something here for everyone.
