Interested in finding out more about this exhilarating MTB experience, where Sugar Beach is one of the preferred hotels and Sun Resorts one of the main partners? Then here’s what you need to know:

The event was to commemorate Colin Mayer

This MTB stage race was created in the memory of the Mauritian cycling legend Colin Mayer, who started cycling in his 30s and was known for his incredible dedication, passion and talent. He sadly passed away after a tragic cycling accident in Moscow in 2009.

Colin Mayer was a highly-regarded cyclist who not only took to the sport with unbelievable enthusiasm, but inspired many in Mauritius to do the same. The “Boss of the Peloton”, as he was known, is commemorated each year through this incredible event, which was started by his cousins Greg and Michel Mayer, and inspires cyclists from Mauritius and around the globe each year to reach new heights.

The event takes place in October 2019

The exceptional Fundsmith Colin Mayer Tour unfolds over three days and multiple stages that take place across Mauritius on the 11, 12 and 13th of October. The tour kicks off at 8 am on each of those days. Before it starts, however, the race pack collection (the registration fees include a T-shirt, special goodies, drinks and meals) and briefing will take place on Thursday 10 October from 12 pm to 6 pm at SPARC (Sport, Aquatic and Recreation Centre), which is located in the core of Uniciti on the west coast of Mauritius. Fundsmith Colin Mayer Tour apparel and branded items will be on sale during the tour at the Race Village.

With generally excellent weather conditions in Mauritius in October, the tour, which offers cyclists access to parts of Mauritius most tourists will never see, is bound to be spectacular.

The event has four categories

The Fundsmith Colin Mayer Tour is actually made up of a number of different categories. They are:

1. Team Race (Men / Women / Mixed / Elite / Master / Buffalo / Under 23)
2. Solo Race (Men / Ladies / Electro Bike)
3. Open Race - Sunday
4. Kids Race - Sunday
A new addition for 2019 is the Ladies Team category. It has been added for women over the age of 40 who would like to participate in a team of two, and was created to encourage more women to embrace this superb adventure and opportunity.

The route for the main event promises to be exhilarating

As mentioned above, the tour’s route is quite extraordinary and offers cyclists access to some truly breathtaking parts of the beautiful island gem. This year’s race also promises those who have participated before a programme that explores new, never-seen-before routes in some truly amazing MTB landscapes.

The entire tour is broken up into stages, with an approximate distance of 60km covered per day. This makes it accessible to intermediate riders but also offers something special for seasoned mountain bike aficionados who want to challenge themselves to beat their best. The route will take participants from coastal tracks to lush jungles, incredible game farms (including many properties owned by the Medina Group who are proud sponsors and hosts of the race once more this year), along amazing slopes and salt pans in three action-packed days—this is not an event you will want to miss.

Here’s what the tour’s main route with entail:

The exceptional Race Village will offer an array of amenities and services

The Race Village for this year’s tour will be based at SPARC once more, a new health, fitness and training facility that also offers leisure options so that visitors can “Play, Train or Entertain”. With the growing popularity of the tour, the organisers have felt it’s necessary to move it to a larger space, in order to better accommodate spectators and participants and to ensure that the latter have access to all the necessary facilities, services and amenities.

Here’s what participants can look forward to at the Race Village:

Fully-equipped restaurant with daily rider meals
Free bike washes
Mechanics and bike shops
Access to free water and ice baths by Odezile
Showering and toilet facilities
Massage, osteopathy and physiotherapy services — to be pre-booked (information on the event site)
Medical tent with doctors and 1st Aid

The race draws mountain bikers from around the world

Since its inception, the Colin Mayer Tour has been very well received and draws mountain bikers from around the world, mainly because it’s not merely seen as a mountain bike race—the Fundsmith Colin Mayer tour centres on a thrilling mix of gorgeous trails, amazing people, a phenomenal vibe at the Race Village and the coming together of like-minded sportsmen and women who are able to bond over their love of the sport.

In previous years, the participant pool was made up of an exciting mix of locals (from Mauritius and Reunion Island) and those from places such as South African, France, Slovakia, the United Kingdom and the United States, and this year promises to be as diverse.

There’s a very special guest of honour

This year’s guest of honour, Andrew McLean, is a fabled cyclist who hails from South Africa. Over his 30 year career, he has done unbelievable things and boasts many titles which he has received both abroad and in South Africa.

He has 25 Cape Epic wins (with 3 overall wins for his category), has won the Cape Argus Cycle Tour and 94.7 Cycle Challenge many times, and he has won the Giro Del Capo four times. But his accolades don’t end there; he is also a motivational speaker, coach, sports show host (which he did for 17 years) and the founder of Cycle Lab —a specialist cyclist retailer. It’s going to be incredible to have him joining all the participants in the Fundsmith Colin Mayer Tour this year.
