The Perfect Place to Play Golf in Mauritius
Mauritius is a highly coveted holiday destination, famed for its tropical interiors, dramatic volcanic landscape and, of course, its flawless, aquamarine shores. And it’s no wonder—apart from its natural beauty and obvious allure, there are some absolutely extraordinary options for accommodation, authentic and unique cuisine to enjoy and a plethora of activities to indulge in. From catamaran cruises to immaculate golf courses: Mauritius has it all. And if you are an avid golfer and wondering where you can play golf in Mauritius, the truth is, you’re totally spoilt for choice. But one thing many people might not realise is amidst the standard 9 and 18-hole golf courses lies one of the most exquisite courses on the planet: Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club. Voted by Golf World Magazine as No.1 of the Top 20 Must Play Golf Courses in a Lifetime in October 2016 and by readers of Golf Journal as the Best International Golf Course in June 2017, this incredible course has really played its part to put Mauritius on the map to truly becoming a world-class golf destination. Here’s why it’s the ultimate place to play golf in Mauritius:
It’s incredibly unique
Ile aux Cerfs directly translates into “The Island of the Deer” due to the fact that it once served as hunting grounds for deer imported from Java. But today it’s a golfer’s paradise. Designed in 2003 by famous course designer, two-time Masters champion and former Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer, the Ile aux Cerfs Golf Course is probably like no other you have ever played. Why? Because it’s not only set on an island—the 18-hole golf course (with two playable greens on the 18th hole) practically spans the entire isle (or at least a huge portion of it)—a golfing island so to speak—making it a unique setting for a day spent on the greens. In partnership with IMG Consultancy, the golf management company which is recognised worldwide, this course has won numerous awards and gained international acclaim. And once you see it for yourself, you will instantly understand why.
It’s totally breathtaking
Not only is the setting unique, this incredible course covers most of the southern half of island—approximately 38 hectares—with carefully designed rolling greens, dramatic mountain vistas, rocky outcrops, peaceful lakes, gullies and an abundance of flora and fauna. And with 12 of the 18 holes offering different sea views, players have got ample opportunity to soak in the incredible natural beauty of the Indian Ocean as they tee off. The par 72 Ile aux Cerfs championship golf course is nothing short of spectacular.
It offers the opportunity to arrive in style
It’s a tough choice: do you take a speedboat to Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club, or arrive by helicopter, taking in the spectacular views of the paradisiacal course from above? This is no ordinary golf course; opting to play golf at Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club offers more than a phenomenal round of golf, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
You can rent your gear on the island
For those that couldn't’ think of anything worse than travelling with their clubs or if you are still starting out and haven’t yet decided on a set, then you can rent clubs at Ile aux Cerfs itself. The golf cars are also for rent and come with a state of the art GPS of the course, making for easy navigation and a streamlined round. Through the GPS device, you can also call a Player Service Assistant to help you with anything you may need, from ordering some light snacks to providing you with sunscreen. For those who are tempted to buy their golf gear while on the island, Ile aux Cerfs has an exceptional Pro Shop with experts who can help you to select the most suitable products.
There’s room for beginners too
Said to be an incredible golf course for those who enjoy a challenge, there is also a golfing academy on site offering lessons even to those that are absolute beginners. to practice your swing or brush up on your skills, if you haven’t played in a while, the Ile aux Cerfs Golf Academy has two excellent teaching Pros on hand to get you from zero to hero in no time, affording players of all levels the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent course.
There’s more to the island than you might think
Naturally, the allure for golfing fans is the gorgeous golf course, but what you might not know is that this prestigious club offers so much more than a good game on the greens. Spend the rest of your afternoon lounging on the private golfer’s beach called Flibustiers, a mere 500m away from the clubhouse with tailor-made butler services and a beachside lobster barbeque, or head to Ile aux Cerf’s Leisure Island, a short golf car ride from the Golf Clubhouse. Here you can enjoy an array of water sports, sunbathe on pristine shores, or simply sip a cocktail at Sands Bar (with some local rum, of course) as you relish the view. You also have the choice of three incredible restaurants; from Sands Grill known for its fresh seafood to La Chaumiere Masala Restaurant offering unique interpretations of Mauritian, Indian and Chinese cuisine and the Sands Bar where they create delicious woodfire pizzas.
If, however, you are not interested in veering too far from the greens, then you have the option of retiring to the sophisticated Clubhouse restaurant for some delectable dishes or Langer’s Bar and Grill, which offers phenomenal views of the 18th hole and the driving range. The atmosphere here is cosy and relaxed, and it serves as the best place for a cup of tea with freshly baked pastries before you tee off in the early morning or a refreshing sundowner with friends after your memorable round of golf in Mauritius. Langer’s Bar and Grill also offers a range of dishes, from delectably prepared seafood dishes and delicious local delights to international favourites created by our excellent chefs (Sydney’s Hamburger and Langer’s Cocktail being some of the best and most popular items on the menu).
There are a total of five dining options—between those at Ile aux Cerfs Leisure Island and Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club—so golfers of varying preferences can rest assured that they will find the best possible option.
You can kickstart the day with a session of yoga
