Meet Balraj Pyndygadoo - Floor Supervisor at Long Beach

But Long Beach is special for another, very important reason - the team of staff members that work here are absolutely passionate about their jobs and about ensuring that their guests truly have the holidays of their dreams. It’s this kind of service that differentiates the “extraordinary” hotels from the “good” ones. One of the people at Long Beach who works tirelessly to ensure his guests are happy is Floor Supervisor in the Housekeeping Department, Balraj Pyndygadoo, who has been in the industry for an incredible 20 years. 

We chatted to him about his role and about Long Beach itself, and this is what he had to share with us:

Why did you choose this job?

In the beginning, I didn’t actually know what housekeeping was! After completing my studies I needed to find a job. I started at COCO Beach as a trainee valet. The more I worked in the industry, the more I enjoyed it and I actually started loving it and once I had finished my training, the hotel hired me full time. I also found that I loved dealing with customers and talking to them. I started getting awards for my job which motivated me further to continue on this career trajectory, it also gave me a good salary, which helped me to take care of my family and that was really important. 

What motivated you to do this job?

Well, as I mentioned, I started getting a lot of recognition which was hugely motivating. But my supervisor Anand and co-worker Kamaljeet also constantly supported and encouraged me which was a big motivating factor. They put a lot of faith in me and that felt good. Then Mr Sandeep Seervisoon encouraged me to apply for a supervisor position. Mrs Suzy Robillard also encouraged me greatly and to be honest, it’s because of these people that I am where I am today. I have been lucky to be surrounded by amazing people. 

What about Long Beach makes you excited about working there?

Definitely my co-workers and my housekeepers who have always encouraged me to do better. My nurse Jenny also always told me to comply first and then complain - I’ve never forgotten that one. All of these things make me excited about working at Long Beach and I think my staff like me a lot, which always helps! We work well together as a strong team always, no matter what we have to do.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

I start my day every day at about 7:45 am. As soon as I arrive, I greet everyone, then change into my uniform. I have breakfast, welcome my staff and attend the morning briefing. I then chat with my team, give them a little motivational talk and set objectives. I look at my priorities for the day, I assist colleagues if need be and vice versa, I supervise my staff and meet with customers. I like asking if they are having a nice stay and if they need anything or if they are having any issues. If they want, I also give them a few of my suggestions or recommendations. I normally end work at about 4:45 pm.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

I would quite like to be an assistant housekeeper in five years, but I am also just really happy where I am right now. I love what I do.

What do you do in your free time?

I hardly have free time, but when I do, I usually do some gardening and take care of my children. Quality time with them is very important. 

How do you manage your personal life based on your work schedule?

Well, I think it’s important to be present whatever you are doing. So the minute I step into the hotel, I think about work and the workplace only - I leave my personal life behind and focus only on our hotel’s vision and my work for the day. Similarly, as soon as I step out of the hotel, I think only of my family, I completely leave my workplace behind. I think that’s a healthy approach - being present and making the best of every day and every moment. 

What does it take to be a good housekeeper? (Apart from being well-groomed, friendly, having good communication skills, etc.)

I think you need to know your job extremely well. You need to know, understand and be able to anticipate the needs of your customers and you need to do your best to always exceed the customer’s expectation

How do you handle an angry or dissatisfied customer?

I talk to them calmly. I apologise, I ask them to explain the situation, I give them special attention, I let them talk, I listen and then I act. I allow them to have a moment to vent their frustration. Whenever I have an unhappy customer, I apply the 3As (Apologise, Acknowledge, Action). 

What about the hotel makes you want to continue to work there?

I have a really good housekeeper Danny Nadal, she always motivates me, she always listens to me, she always shows me how to do things right and encourages me to do better, she teaches me many things. She has helped me to grow and to be a better person both professionally and personally. And that makes all the difference in a work environment.


What is your favourite thing about the hotel? 

Long Beach



I love the incredible, modern design of the hotel - it’s wonderfully luxurious. 

Where do you see the tourism industry in the 10 years from now?

I guess I am a little worried about the tourism industry. I think it’s important that we constantly strive to ensure that guests have the true Mauritian experience and excellent service, but I am not sure the younger generation has the same approach. I think only time will tell, but we need to do our best to ensure the industry still grows.
