Arif's Favourite Activities at Kanuhura

November 15 2019

Situated in the Lhaviyani Atoll in the heart of the Maldives and surrounded by glistening, temperate azure waters, the five-star gypset haven of Kanuhura is a heavenly oasis; a luxury hideaway created with wild-hearted world travellers in mind. The designer resort, imbued with a luxe bohemian charm, gives way to soft, powder-fine beaches edged by the cyan-tinged tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, home to a plethora of unbelievable sea life; it’s the epitome of paradise.

Apart from mirage-worthy natural surrounds and tasteful gypset comforts, Kanuhura is fabled for its world-class service, dreamlike accommodation, magnificent dining options, creative mixology, timelines memories offerings and the multitude of activities on offer, many of which are as exclusive as they are unique. From daily activity programmes jam-packed with thrilling things to do, a world-class spa and an on-site diving centre to a wealth of water sports and more - with so much on offer at this gorgeous resort, it can be difficult to decide how to spend your time.

The highly-skilled staff at Kanuhura are there to assist you every step of the way to ensure that your holiday in the Maldives is everything you could wish for and more. And one of the best people to ask for advice on activities is definitely Ibrahim Arif, the Front Office Manager, who has worked at Kanuhura for many years.

Ibrahim Arif is known as a hardworking, punctual and extremely friendly person, who absolutely loves his job and sees Kanuhura as his second home, his main home being on Kurendhoo, a local island in the south of the Lhaviyani Atoll.

Arif has had an incredible journey with Kanuhura; he started working at the resort on 15 March 2004 as a Bellboy, then became a Receptionist in 2006, a Shift Leader a year and a half later, and in another year and a half he became Senior Shift Leader (there were two at the time). He then became the Reception Manager, and almost a year after the resort’s re-opening, was named Assistant Front Office Manager. In 2019, on the 15 March to be exact, Arif celebrated 15 years with the company and during this year as well, he was promoted to the Front Office Manager.

Due to his work for the company and the amount of time he has spent at Kanuhura, he’s literally the perfect person to ask regarding activities at the resort so we decided to ask him to share his favourite activities with us. Here’s what he recommends guests do at Kanuhura:

Embrace a Sunset Cruise - a scheduled group cruise or a private sunset cruise

The sunsets in the Maldives are truly something to behold; the golden hour is a magical time when the unrivalled natural surrounds of the island are illuminated in breathtaking hues of pinks, purples, oranges and golds. The sunsets here are absolutely mesmerising and showcase the beauty of this paradise in all of its glory, which is why this is something Arif believes deserves to be enjoyed in the very best of ways, such as Kanuhura’s magnificent Sunset Cruise.

Dhoni Cruise

The scheduled sunset group cruise takes place every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday between 18:00 and 19:30 and is extremely popular, so it’s best to book at least one day in advance.

One of the reasons it’s one of Arif’s top activities is because not only do you get to enjoy the unparalleled spectacle of sunset from the ocean itself, aboard a gorgeous Dhoni, the entire experience is complemented by Testulat Champagne and delectable canapés (including meat, seafood and vegetarian varieties) - indulging in the finer things in life while relishing the surrounds is what luxury island holidays are all about. A bottle of water is also included per person, as are fruit juices for children. The scheduled group cruise is $120* per adult (over the age of 12) and $60* per child (between 6 and 12) and there is a minimum of four people per cruise.

For those who would like a more exclusive experience, Arif recommends opting for the private sunset cruise. It also runs between 18:00 and 19:30, includes Champagne, water, a delicious assortment of canapés to be enjoyed on board and fruit juices (apple or orange) for children, but makes for a more intimate and special experience than the group cruise option. The private sunset cruise costs $550* per boat for four people, with $40* per additional adult (over 12 years of age) and $25* per additional child (between 6 and 12).

Try your hand at Sunset Fishing - scheduled group fishing or the private fishing experience

Arif’s next favourite activity is sunset fishing - another extraordinary way to enjoy the magic of sunset. The scheduled group fishing activity takes place every Saturday, Monday and Wednesday between 18:30 and 20:30 and is truly an excursion to be remembered.

The Sunset Fishing experience centres on the traditional Maldivian way of fishing, where guests can embrace a famous Maldivian sunset while on their search for their big catch. This activity takes place on a traditional Maldivian fishing boat in the open sea, and focuses on handline fishing, as per the traditional method, which makes it a unique and extraordinary authentic experience. On board, guests will receive mini sandwiches (including meat, vegetarian and seafood options) as well as a beer, soft drinks, fruit juices for children and water.

Sunset Fishing at Kanuhura

Arif emphasises that “This excursion is another wonderfully popular activity at Kanuhura, so it’s a good idea to book ahead to avoid disappointment” The scheduled group fishing activity costs $90* per adult (over 12) and $45* per child (6-12) and requires a minimum of 4 people.

Arif once again also recommends the private sunset fishing excursion because of its exclusive and memorable appeal, with all of the same bells and whistles offered in the group cruise, but on a smaller, more intimate scale. The private Sunset Fishing experience costs $450* per boat for four people, with $30* per additional adult and $20* per additional child.

Experience a Maldivian Dinner to the beat of Bodu Beru drums

According to Arif, “The Maldivian-themed dinner evening at Kanuhura, enhanced by the incredible sound of Bodu Beru drums, is one of those really special experiences that I recommend to all my guests”. The magical evening he is referring to takes place every Thursday evening at A Mano and makes for an exceptional way to discover the Maldivian - and naturally, Arif’s very own - culture. The evening centres on all things ‘Maldives’, from the food options in the buffet to the toe-tapping local music and Bodu Beru drums - it’s a fabulous immersive and authentic experience. Those who love the sound of the Bodu Beru drums, you will be thrilled to hear that your welcome to the island takes place to the sound of these fantastic instruments at the jetty!

Opt for a private island picnic

Private island pic nic at Kanuhura

Eager to get away from the other holidaymakers and enjoy a delicious picnic with your loved ones on a private deserted island? Then another of Arif’s favourite activities (which he loves to do experience with his family and friends) is perfect for you. On request, guests can enjoy a specially prepared picnic or beachside barbecue on the ultimate picnic island of Masleggihura (one of Kanuhura’s two deserted neighbouring islands). Here you can lounge on the beach, explore the island, spend hours snorkelling and make the most of some delectable treats that you can relish in the most perfect tropical surrounds - Arif strongly believes that this is an experience you won’t ever forget.

Interested in soaking up once-in-a-lifetime experiences in the most sublime and exotic surrounds? Then book a stay at Kanuhura and indulge in a holiday that is sure to be remembered for years to come.
