Sun, sea, absolute luxury and a plethora of exciting water sports, many of which are totally free—what more could you want?
Interested to know which water sports and water-based activities we think you shouldn't miss while on holiday in Mauritius? Then read on:
1. Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUPing) has grown in popularity over the last few years in Mauritius, and many hotels offer it on a complimentary basis. While it might seem fairly new to you, it’s actually been around for far longer than many other water sports thanks to African warriors and ancient fishermen.
This water sport allows you to relish your time in the ocean without actually touching the water (so to speak). As the name implies, it involves standing on a board (similar to those used for surfing) and using an oar or paddle to manoeuvre through the water. Enjoy a SUP session of a lifetime at Sugar Beach as the colours of sunset illuminate the sky as part of their Sunset Timeless Memories activities.
2. Scuba Diving
A trip to Mauritius would be amiss without snorkelling or scuba diving at least once. The reef-protected lagoons here make for the ultimate underwater playgrounds where, even by snorkelling you are able to see some exciting and vivid marine life, from baby sharks and turtles to colourful fish and corals. If you are a more advanced diver, you will be afforded the opportunity to enjoy a myriad of dive sites which may lead to incredible encounters with bigger sea creatures (if you are lucky), but the variety and beauty of the fish here are sure to dazzle either way.
If you don’t have a diving certificate or would like to advance, then you can do that in Mauritius as well. Excellent dive centres, like Sun Divers based at La Pirogue, offer an array of courses fit for beginners and more advanced divers alike.
Keep in mind that with something like diving there is a small risk involved, so it’s best to only use the services of accredited, reputable dive centres (like Sun Divers).
Windsurfing is a fabulous way to make the most of the temperate, tropical waters of Mauritius and the magical surrounds, all while getting a workout. The flat waters of the lagoons and the often consistent and predictable winds make Mauritius a phenomenal destination for fans of the sport or even those looking to try it out. If you are serious about your windsurfing, head to one of the places that have become fabled for the sport, such as Le Morne, and test your skills as you soak up the exquisite destination.
If you are looking for a water sport that is as novel as it is exciting, then parasailing is for you. This fantastic water sport allows you to glide along at the back of a speed boat while attached to a parachute. Revel in the glorious colours of the Indian Ocean, take in the sights of the tropical surrounds and relax as you fly through the air like a bird.
Are you an intrepid adventurer looking for something to get your heart pumping? Then waterskiing is a great pick for you. This high-speed sport is a little tricky to master at first, but once you get the hang of it, you are sure to have an incredible time along the glossy waters of the lagoons in Mauritius. It’s wildly exciting and quite a workout, but the bragging rights of having gone water skiing in Mauritius are definitely worth the stiff muscles you might have the next day.
6. Glass-bottomed Boat Trips
If you are looking for a more chilled sea-based activity than those already mentioned, and one that you can actually do with your family, then taking a relaxed glass-bottomed boat trip is sure to be memorable. These boats, as their name implies, have glass panels built into the bottom of them, so that as you navigate through the waters you are able to glimpse the incredible marine life as you go. It also provides a great time to take a deep breath and soak up the magic of the destination.
Whether you opt for a sea cave kayaking experience or simply want to explore your hotel’s lagoon, kayaking makes for an excellent experience. With this activity, you can revel in the splendour of the lagoons and the destination, and enjoy it at your own pace. Grab a two-seater kayak, a pair of oars and sail through the water with one of your favourite people. To enhance this experience further, stay at Long Beach and partake in their Sunrise Kayaking session, where the experience of kayaking just after dawn promises to be unforgettable.
8. Big Game Fishing
Fishing pros and avid adventurers alike are sure to enjoy this fantastic and novel sea-based activity. A game fishing excursion involves heading out to deeper waters in search of some big catches! All equipment will be provided, and you will receive expert advice on how to up your chances of catching something exciting. Certain big game fishing tours even take place overnight—there are loads of options on offer, which allows you to find the best trip for you.
9. A Seaplane Excursion
While certainly a water-centric activity with a twist, taking a flight over the exquisite lagoons of Mauritius is a truly sensational way to get a sense of the magical country. During a seaplane flight, you will be able to witness the magic of the ocean, coral reefs, beaches and lagoons with thrilling take-offs and landings that happen in the water. This private experience is bound to be wonderfully memorable.
10. Underwater Scooter
Take adventure to the extreme with the incredible underwater scooter rides offered at Grand Bay and Trou aux Biches. Much like scuba diving, but potentially easier, is this underwater experience that involves a special scooter, complete with a dome that allows you to breathe underwater. Before you start the experience, you will receive a safety briefing and once you are in the water, there are divers to guide the experience. It’s an amazing and unique activity, perfect for the wild-hearted travellers looking to have the holiday of their lives in Mauritius.
