Beach in the Maldives

Travel magazines and fancy high-end luxury brochures are great at convincing eager travellers that the places they are looking at in the highly polished glossy images are real. We’ve all seen those pictures; absolutely flawless beaches, boarded by lush tropical surrounds and coconut palm trees, that dissolve into aquamarine waters which shimmer and sparkle in the sunlight. What few know, however, is the picture-perfect tropical oasis of everyone’s dreams actually does exist, in all its unfiltered glory; the Maldives.

This stunning archipelago made up of some 1000 islands provides everything that sun worshipping travellers can imagine, from unparalleled luxury accommodation to tropical crystalline waters that boast a thriving and vivid eco-system—it’s literally the stuff of island dreams. Not to mention that the Maldives is home to some of the world’s most spectacular beaches, perfect for lazy days spent lapping up the sun (especially great in the dry summer months).

If you are looking to spend a relaxing holiday in paradise and want to find the perfect Maldives beach, then here are some of our favourites:

Hulhumalé Beach

Located approximately 2 km (approximately ten minutes by car) from the international airport, this beautiful beach in the Maldives is one of the most accessible. Situated in the Kaafu Atoll, here, you are able to make the most of the sensational surrounds the Maldives has become famous for without having to break the bank or hop on a ferry, speedboat or seaplane to get there. Gorgeously vivid blue waters and white sands are sure to have you in holiday mode in no time, and the resorts nearby are well-priced. It’s a great beach to call your homebase if you want to enjoy snorkelling, scuba diving excursions or a memorable sunset cruise. Because this beach is part of the Muslim area, bikinis are not allowed and it’s important that you are respectfully dressed at all times.

Bikini Beach

If the above comment about bikinis took you off guard, then you will be happy to know that apart from the resort island beaches, there is a popular beach in the Maldives that does allow you to wear a bikini—the aptly named, bikini beach. This beautiful private Maldives beach is located on Rasdhoo Island and is known for its stellar views, its incredible expanse of white sandy shores and idyllic palm trees. It requires about an hour’s speedboat ride from the airport, but when you get here you can indulge in swimming, snorkelling and suntanning.

Fulhadhoo Beach

Deemed one of the best beaches in the world, this beautiful beach in the Maldives is wonderfully secluded. Known for its untouched beauty and serene surrounds, where you are more likely to spot some sensational sea life than other tourists. This gorgeous hidden gem, surrounded by coconut palms, sits alongside sapphire lagoons, perfect for snorkelling, and in certain areas, for free diving. There are also a few deserted islands nearby that you can swim to.

This Maldives beach is located in the Baa Atoll and will take about two hours to reach via speedboat. Apart from a few locals fishing, you aren’t likely to see many other people, which is why it makes for the perfect beach in the Maldives to simply sit back, relax and enjoy its sheer beauty.

Glowing Beaches

While this does not technically refer to ‘one’ specific beach in the Maldives, the bioluminescent phenomenon is truly spectacular and a must-see for any traveller. The bioluminescent beaches in the Maldives have gained international fame for their wonderous “Sea of Stars”; the utterly romantic sight of little glowing phytoplankton sparkling in the water at night. While this sighting can’t be guaranteed at any of the beaches that have become known for it—Reethi, Dusti Thani and Mirihi—the best time to see one of the glowing beaches seems to be in the dry season. What’s more, this exceptional sight could actually happen at any of the Maldives beaches if the conditions are right!

Dhigurah Beach

This Maldives beach is located in the South Ari Atoll on one of the local islands and is considered one of the best Maldives beaches by many. It’s wonderfully secluded and has become known as a great spot to dive with whale sharks. Bikinis are also allowed at this beach (in certain parts) and there is a wonderful selection of local shops and cafes close by. The ferry journey to get here is quite long (over four hours), so just factor that into your travel time.

Kanuhura Beach

If you are looking for the perfect beach in the Maldives, the chances are you will find it on a sensational resort island, like Kanuhura. This five-star resort boasts a magnificent beach in the Maldives and a stunning house reef, perfect for snorkelling, swimming and diving. If you are fortunate enough to be able to stay in one of their utterly stunning gypset-inspired water villas, you might even be able to experience the magical array of marine life from your villa’s very balcony (vivid schools of fish and reef sharks are not uncommon).

If that wasn’t enough, Kanuhura also boasts two spectacular deserted islands nearby which are the perfect spots for “castaway” picnics, days spent enjoying private beaches or spectacular exclusive dining experiences for you and your beloved. More than just a beautiful beach in the Maldives (or beaches, rather), this unparalleled haven also offers unbelievable dining experiences, a wealth of activities and much more—it makes for the ultimate island escape.
