Andrew Slome OBE

Andrew Slome OBE
Hotel Manager - Sugar Beach Resort

Andrew is the General Manager of Sugar Beach Resort. He started off in South Africa before being transferred to Mauritius nearly thirty years ago. He has been with Sun Resorts ever since.

Andrew Slome has had nearly thirty years of experience with the company in Mauritius. He was appointed General Manager of Sugar Beach Resort in January 1999 and has brought his hands-on style of management to every aspect of running the hotel, including the introduction of an annual Jazz Festival to fit in with the Dixieland feel of the Resort.

He puts the success of Sugar Beach Resort down to its combination of good looks and a relaxed atmosphere: “That feeling of formal French colonial style and laid-back Provencal holiday house is important.”

Andrew was born in Cape Town in 1954 and worked part-time in hotels as a student. He trained at the Johannesburg Hotel School and got his first job at Southern Sun (Sol Kerzner’s South African hotel company) in Port Elizabeth before being sent to Mauritius at 4 days’ notice. He never went home again.

Andrew Slome is convinced of the importance of training, both internally and using management training “gurus” – he himself has completed American trainer Tom Peters’ “Skunk Camp” and a People Management course at Disney University in Florida. Andrew Slome has received the Company’s General Manager of the Year award, honorary citizenship of both the village of Flic-en-Flac and the district of Moka, and an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his services to tourism in Mauritius.

He is married with two children and his favourite relaxation is to escape to his cottage in nearby Tamarin, and go deep sea fishing with his son.
