In the idyllic setting of tropical Mauritius, 30 Chinese couples said “I do” on the Deux Cocos island on 8th September 2014.
Singing and dancing, sega music, the Miss China 2014 parade as well as a fireworks display were all part of the nuptial celebrations.
The primary aim of this event was to promote Mauritius as an ideal destination for weddings and/or honeymoons for Chinese travellers.
Mauritius has entered this growing market just as China opens up to the rest of the world with a particular focus on weddings, which are an important part of Chinese tradition and customs.
Mauritius has already proved itself in this target market by winning various awards, most notably the World Travel Awards “Best Honeymoon Destination in the World” and “Best Honeymoon Destination in the Indian Ocean” in both 2013 and 2014. During the ceremony, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) has also been named a member of the Shanghai Wedding Trade Association.
Getting married or honeymooning overseas had developed into something of a craze that has spread across China. Around 20,000 out of 150,000 couples that get married in Shanghai now go on to celebrate their honeymoon abroad.
Strong campaigns aimed at the Chinese market such as the Rose Wedding Show and special tours catering to the media and travel industry have yielded success in attracting visitors. In 2013, 41,913 Chinese tourists visited Mauritius compared to 20,885 in 2012 - an increase of over 100%. This year the MTPA aims to attract over 60,000 Chinese travellers to Mauritius.
Minister of Tourism and Leisure, Michael Sik Yuen, believes that this extraordinary event of 30 couples exchanging vows on their soil will contribute significantly towards making Mauritius a top destination wedding choice for Chinese tourists wishing to get married or spend their honeymoon abroad.
Dr Karl Motoosamy, Director of the MTPA, stated he hopes that the high levels of service and wide range of activities available in Mauritius will attract more couples to tie the knot on the island.
